UFC 117: Chael Sonnen Accuses Lance Armstrong of Giving Himself Cancer

“Lance Armstrong did a number of things and he gave himself cancer,” Sonnen said on Pro MMA Radio.

“He cheated, he did drugs, and he gave himself cancer. Well, instead of saying ‘Hey listen, I cheated and gave myself cancer, don’t be like me,’ he actually made himself the victim and then went out and profited something like $15 million from this ‘Hey, poor me, let’s find a cure for cancer’ campaign instead of just coming clean and saying, ‘Look, here’s what I did, I screwed myself up, and I hope people learn from my mistakes.’”

Apparently, for Chael Sonnen, it’s just not enough to say ridiculous things about Anderson Silva (among others associated with the UFC) when trying to hype his upcoming fight at UFC 117.

Sonnen has apparently decided to branch out and voice his opinions on other professional athletes as well, and was apparently answering a question about the type of people who bother him for being as much of a fraud as he thinks that Silva is.

Armstrong, an American professional road racing cyclist who is best known for winning the Tour de France a record seven consecutive times, has repeatedly denied that he ever used performance-enhancing drugs and has never tested positive for any type of PED, despite dozens, if not hundreds, of tests.

Obviously, Sonnen has no evidence for his theory that using PEDs caused Armstrong to contract cancer and as easy as it is to speculate based on the massive athletic achievements of Mr. Armstrong, suspicion alone does not give Sonnen the right to say such things in the media.

Lance Armstong isn’t new to this sort of controversy, but even he would have to be surprised at how these comments have come so far out of left field.

I’m not a lawyer, but I hope that Armstrong sues the pants off of Sonnen for some type of slander.

Not to mention, Sonnen’s statements are incredibly distasteful and offensive to every cancer survivor out there.

Move over Tito—there’s a new “King Douchebag” in town, and his name is Chael Sonnen.

Very interesting and disturbing article! Nice work!

Very good article. I found myself astonished reading it, because I can’t believe someone would be so low about something so serious. My grandmother and mother are both survivors of breast cancer, and my grandfather died many years ago from stomach cancer. This is just… wow, is all I can say.

this is an interesting and informative article. I’m surprised Sonnen said that, and I wouldn’t be shocked if UFC deals him a harsh penalty. It’s statements like that which cause people to compare MMA to pro wrestling, something that Dana White and other MMA leaders hate.

He went way to far. There is a line and he crossed it by a mile

  5. Mr. El Guapo!

Great article awesome read. Sonnen is very quickly becoming the guy everyone wanted to KO Silva to the guy that needs to get his mouth permanently shut by Silva. The sad part about this is that in all reality he is a great fighter in the MMA world and that reputation will forever be tarnished with this whole career massacre this man is leading (as you mentioned a la Tito Ortiz). I want to know what he will say if he doesn’t win on Saturday (and I believe he won’t, just my opinion). What will he say on the microphone when Joe Rogan comes to him and says what are your thoughts on the fight you just lost. Will he shake Anderson’s hand after the loss? or will he do like Anderson did at 112 and apologize on his knee’s in front of the world. I don’t even want to fathom the thought of him winning because O can already in vision the annoyance this man will become hyping his championship fights. I am one to actually appreciate the hyping of an upcoming bout but only to a certain extent. Don’t become just plain out disrespectful and a utter complete ass**** (excuse the french). It seems that the most important part of this sport is slowly drowning. Martial Arts in general is a respectful Art and people like Sonnen, James Toney, Ricardo Mayorga (Boxer trying to go MMA), even Ortiz at times are making a mockery of the respect area of MMA. One fighter making me serious proud to be an MMA follower is Jon “Bones” Jones he made his points leading to the fight “He (Matyushenko)is a great fighter and has been in there with the best but it’s my time right now and I will take the win” statements that made it clear this man respects the sport, respects his opponent and will still say things to hype the fight in a respectful manner. Ok I think I made my point in this mini-story book lol.

provide all the cyclists the spirits they can take,I’d like to know how fast they can peddle!! corked flesh of animal What a liar! It looks like to me that these competitors are getting very, very effective at hide the use of forbidden substances but on the other hand this boy wasn’t reasonably great enough. In my view this is fresh great argument for eating only vegetables.
