If you work long enough, you may someday find yourself unemployed. It happens. In fact, it has happened to ‘Yours Truly’ on more than one occasion and I will attest that it is no fun at all. In fact – it downright sucks.
You don’t need me to tell you that we are living in tough economic times. Everyone knows that – especially those that are either unemployed or underemployed (working, but not earning enough to sustain an enjoyable/affordable lifestyle). According to mainstream media, these numbers are growing by the thousands each and every day (at least, in North America).
Personally, I have grown increasingly concerned as many of my own friends, family members and students have struggled to secure permanent full-time employment. Unfortunately, they are not alone.
So what can they do to find a new job?
In an upcoming series of articles, I will ‘attempt’ to answer this ever important question.
Article 1 – Understand the psychological downside of being unemployed. Learn to find your self-confidence – again!
Article 2 – Define your dream job. Know where you are going before you attempt to get there.
Article 3 – Understand the importance of a First Impression – it can make or break you.
Article 4 – Weigh all of the pros and cons of Re-Education. Know what you are getting into.
Article 5 – “Why I am not a fan of conventional job search techniques and ideas.”
Article 6 – Take a risk and “Think Outside of the Box”
Article 7 – How can Social Networking help? Quick answer – it can’t!
Article 8 – How to improve on your Soft Skills – and why? (and what are they?!!)
Article 9 – Learn how to sell yourself and answer every employer’s greatest question: “What’s in it for me?”
Article 10 – Invest in yourself – you’re worth it. But be prepared to make sacrifices.
In my experience, most people simply lack the self-confidence to know where and how to begin. This is where I come in. I will rely specifically on my personal and professional experiences in an attempt to point you in the right direction and assist you with brain-storming sessions to inspire your creative thinking.
It is not my intention to give you all of the answers. My intention is to create a framework which will enable you to find your own success.
“A teacher is never a giver of truth – he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself. A good teacher is merely a catalyst.” Bruce Lee

James,
I appreciate again, i gave your number today plus previous employers, i applied as tire technician at costco here near my home, and the only thing i know is they need urgent, swamped with winter packages. Anyway my interview went perfect and seems like he is happy except my timings for work.
Your customer skills training was not onlly helpful but i think its mandatory in this high competition world.
Thanks
Mohammed.
Hey James!
It's been awhile since we had a sit down conversation, but I've been very busy with school lately. However, since I talked to you; I passed through Phase VI -or- 5 of the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) process. Only 3 more phases to complete, which include a: Physical, Job Offer and the actual Hiring Phase. Phase 5 was for reference checks. I'm sooo very excited.
Words cannot describe how thankful I am that God placed a nice person, such as yourself, in my path at the EXACT right time!!
I am thankful EVERYDAY at school, even when there is stress, that you gave me the opportunity to live and learn more than even what was being taught in the classroom. I learned how to ease the great social anxiety that I faced everyday. It took awhile, because that's how growing works.
Thank you so much for allowing me to grow, learn, and live a happier full-filled life:) I am going to be finishing the Level 1 (Pre-Apprenticeship) portion, even if I do get in, because my perspective is that you literally saved my life and I can't find any other way to thank you but doing you the respect of having at least 15 people (that you hand-selected) to graduate.
Hopefully we can have a sit down sometime and discuss stuff again.
Keith,
This may be the nicest letter that I have ever received
Thank you.
I am glad to hear that you will be finishing the program, but please do not feel obligated if another opportunity should present itself.
If you really want to thank me, you will continue to improve your life and your goals throughout your lifetime
Great job so far, you have come a long way in just a few short months and I am very proud of you.
Talk soon.
James
