Bring Back Tournament-Style Fighting in the UFC

Recently, I purchased UFC 6 on eBay (brand new) for a whopping $4.00 (shipping included), which was easily the best $4.00 that I had spent all year. In light of recent pay-per-view let downs, I suppose I was feeling a bit nostalgic for the good old days when the UFC was still about pitting all shapes, sizes and unique fighting styles against each other in an all or nothing tournament style of fighting. There were no rounds (20-minute time limits) and despite no biting or eye gouging, the UFC was proud to declare that they had “no rules”. Yes it WAS the equivalent of “human cock-fighting”...

Cycle for Hope: An Interview with Nathan Srigley

Prepare to be inspired… Nathan Srigley is a 24-year old Niagara cyclist who has just ridden his mountain bike over 2,000 km across Ontario from Kenora on the Manitoba border (Departure: September 10, 2009) to Niagara-on-the Lake (Arrival: October 3, 2009). His objective was to raise awareness and funds for Wells of Hope (www.wellsofhope.com). “Wells of Hope has successfully drilled many deep-water wells in Guatemala. However, drilling projects are currently at a standstill, because the drilling rig that was in use is worn out, obsolete, and no longer functional. A modern, versatile and...

Job Search Series: Competing for a Career in Today’s Struggling Economy

If you work long enough, you may someday find yourself unemployed. It happens. In fact, it has happened to ‘Yours Truly’ on more than one occasion and I will attest that it is no fun at all. In fact – it downright sucks. You don’t need me to tell you that we are living in tough economic times. Everyone knows that – especially those that are either unemployed or underemployed (working, but not earning enough to sustain an enjoyable/affordable lifestyle). According to mainstream media, these numbers are growing by the thousands each and every day (at least, in North America). Personally,...

University of Connecticut Football Player Jasper Howard Stabbed to Death

Hi All, I saw this in the news today (Oct 23) and I just couldn’t help but to be affected by it. What an absolute shame that this young man’s life has ended so violently. As a youth football coach (and the father of a young football player with NFL dreams) it really concerns me as to why this sort of thing would happen. Without knowing anything about Jasper Howard, it is certainly plausible that this young man had brought this misfortune onto himself. . Then again, what shocks me the most about this is just how senseless of a crime it would appear to be. Jasper Howard helped his football...

Coaching Youth Football: The Challenges and Benefits of being a Parent-Coach

One of my biggest fears in coaching is NOT that I will be subject to intense scrutiny and/or criticism by my players’ parents. That just comes with the territory and I accept that as a part of the coaching role. It is human nature that parents would want what is best for their child and they have every right to question a Coach’s actions, instructional techniques, and communication style. If a parent ever has a question or a concern about how I, or my assistants, coach – I would absolutely welcome the opportunity to speak with them about it, to hopefully strengthen the lines of communication...

A Better Understanding of the Intimidation Factor

In my recent examination to better understand why mixed martial arts will never become more mainstream and popular than it currently is, I have concluded that a lot of the animosity that is aimed directly towards mixed martial arts stems from its poorly perceived social image as it relates directly to the intimidation factor that currently exists in today’s pop culture environment. The use of intimidation in every single aspect of this particular sport goes against everything that is pure about martial arts and as entertaining as it may be for its’ current blood-thirsty demographic, the...

Don’t Blame Coach Rampage

Anyone can be negative. It requires very little effort or intelligence. For some, it just comes naturally. (Gee, I wonder if that statement is directed at Rampage or at his critics?) Here’s something else to consider; Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is only coaching (if you can call it that) because no doubt, it was a requirement of his contract. That was his first mistake. To be a good coach, first and foremost, you must be driven to help others. Your motivation must come from seeing others succeed. You are a “people person” who is a combination of being a great listener and being someone...

Overcoming the Problem of Steroids

Hi Everyone, Please note that I am not an unreasonable person who refuses to admit when he has made a mistake. After much soul searching, I have decided to pull this article – originally titled: “Steroid Use Amongst MMA Fighters: Losing Respect by the Day” It was harsh, judgmental and poorly written. I can see that now. My only excuse for lashing out the way that I did is that I am beyond frustrated and really starting to lose all hope that the problems associated with steroids in our culture are much larger and much more serious than anyone is willing to admit (or realizes). Or...
